Mid-Year Changes? You May Qualify Now
Health insurance isn’t just for Open Enrollment. Life changes, like a new job, a growing family, or a move, can qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period through Covered California.
What Is a Special Enrollment Period?
A Special Enrollment Period is a time outside of Open Enrollment (November 1-January 31) when you can apply for coverage or make changes to your existing plan–as long as you’ve had a qualifying life event. In most cases you have 60 days from the event to take action (Covered California, 2024).
Common Qualifying Life Events
You may qualify for a SEP if you’ve experienced one of the following:
- Lost your health coverage (job-based, Medi-Cal, or other minimum essential coverage)
- Got married or divorced
- Had a baby, adopted a child, or placed a child for adoption
- Moved to a new ZIP code or county in California
- Turned 26 and lost coverage through a parent’s plan (plan is valid until end of the year)
- Gained citizenship or lawful presence
- Returned from active military duty.
These events may open a temporary enrollment window for you to get covered, often with access to financial help (Covered California, 2024).
Why It Matters?
Missing this 60-day window could mean waiting until next Open Enrollment Period, which may leave you uninsured. If you qualify for a SEP, acting quickly can help you:
- Avoid gaps in coverage
- Protect against unexpected medical bills
- Maintain access to your preferred doctors and medications
