Rates Are Going Up in 2026 — Here’s What You Need to Know!
Rates Are Going Up
On average, plans are expected to rise about 10% in 2026. Some people may see smaller increases, but others will feel it more. And if Congress doesn’t extend the federal financial help (called premium tax credits) that’s set to expire at the end of 2025, monthly bills could jump by 66% or more for 1.7 million Californians (Covered California, 2024a; Covered California, 2024b).
Aetna is Leaving Covered California
One more change:
- Aetna will no longer sell plans through Covered California in 2026.
- If you’re one of the 21,000 people currently enrolled in an Aetna plan, you’ll need to switch carriers during open enrollment (Covered California, 2024a).
The Good News
California has set aside $190 million in state-based subsidies to help lower-income Californias keep coverage affordable. Plus, most consumers will still have access to multiple carriers in each region, even with Aetna exiting (Covered California, 2024a).
What This Means for You
- Don’t auto-renew: Your current plan may not be the best deal for 2026.
- Check your subsidies: What you pay depends heavily on whether federal tax credits are renewed.
- If you’re with Aetna, you’ll need to pick a new plan.
Why Act Now
Open Enrollment begins October 15, 2025, and that’s your window to review options, make changes, and lock in your 2026 coverage. Waiting could mean higher premiums or being stuck with a plan that doesn’t fit your needs.
