Using Your Medicare Plan for the First Time in 2026

If you’ve started using your Medicare plan this year, you’re not alone. January is when many people refill prescriptions, schedule appointments, and see their coverage in action for the first time. And with that often comes questions.

Here’s what to expect (and what’s completely normal) as you begin using your 2026 Medicare Plan.

What to Expect at your First Appointment/Pharmacy Visit

It’s common to notice copays, deductibles, or coinsurance right away. Most Medicare Advantage and Part D plans reset deductibles on January 1, which means early-year costs can feel higher than expected (Medicare.gov, 2026).

This doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong, it’s just how plans are designed.

How Costs and Authorizations Show Up in Real Life

Some Services may require:

  • Prior authorization
  • Referrals to specialists
  • Step therapy for certain medications

These rules vary by plan and are determined by the insurance carrier, not your doctor’s office (CMS,2026). Seeing these requirements early in the year is common.

Tip: If something in the ANOC doesn’t match what you expected, give us a call to review the change and view options.

What’s Normal vs. What’s Worth Questioning

Usually Normal:

  • January copays feeling higher
  • Deductibles applying again
  • Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) arriving before or after appointments

Worth Asking About:

  • A medication suddenly not covered
  • A provider showing as out-of-network unexpectedly
  • Costs that don’t match your plan’s Summary of Benefits

If something feels off, it’s okay to pause and ask questions.

Don’t Assume, Reach Out Early

One of the biggest mistakes we see is people assuming an issue can’t be fixed. Many concerns are easiest to resolve early in the year, especially if it’s a billing issue, authorization questions, or network clarification (NCOA, 2025).
