Understanding Medicare Advantage Benefits

Many people choose a Medicare Advantage plan for its medical coverage–doctor visits, hospital care, and prescription drugs. But, what often gets overlooked are the additional benefits included in many plans.

These “extra” benefits can add real value, yet many members don’t fully understand what they include or how to use them.

Here’s a simple breakdown of how Medicare Advantage works and how supplemental benefits fit into the picture.

What is a Medicare Advantage Plan?

A Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare, offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare (Medicare.gov, 2026).

These plans typically include:

  • Hospital Coverage (Part A)
  • Medical Coverage (Part B)
  • Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D)
While they must cover everything Original Medicare covers, many plans also include additional benefits not offered under Original Medicare (CMS, 2926).

What “Supplemental Benefits” Mean

In Medicare Advantage, supplemental benefits refer to extra services included in your plan beyond standard Medicare coverage.

These are not the same as Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans, which are separate policies designed to fill cost gaps in Original Medicare.

Instead, supplemental benefits are built directly into your Medicare Advantage plan and vary depending on the carrier and plan design.

Common Supplemental Benefits

Many Medicare Advantage Plans now include benefits such as:

  • Dental exams, cleanings, and sometimes major services
  • Vision exams and allowances for glasses or contacts
  • Hearing exams and hearing aids
  • Over-the-counter (OTC) allowances for health items
  • Fitness programs or gym memberships
  • Transportation to medical appointments
  • Meal delivery following a hospital stay

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the vast majority of Medicare Advantage plans offer at least one supplemental benefit, with many expanding offerings in recent years (KFF, 2025).

Why many People Don’t Use These Benefits

Even when these benefits are included, they often go unused. Common reasons include:

  • Benefits reset each year and don’t roll over
  • There are limits (dollar amounts, visit caps, or frequency rules)
  • Some benefits require activation or enrollment
  • Certain services must be used within a specific provider network

CMS notes that benefit availability and usage requirements vary by plan, which can make them easy to overlook if not reviewed carefully (CMS, 2026).

How to Actually Use Your Benefits

To make the most of your plan, it’s helpful to:

  • Review your plan’s Summary of Benefits or member portal
  • Check how often benefits can be used (monthly, quarterly, annually)
  • Confirm whether providers must be in-network
  • Use benefits earlier in the year instead of waiting
Using these benefits proactively can help support your health and reduce out-of-pocket expenses.

A Quick Reality Check

While supplemental benefits are valuable, they shouldn’t be the main reason you choose or keep a plan.

More important factors include:

  • Whether your doctors are in-network
  • How your prescriptions are covered
  • Your overall out-of-pocket costs

Supplemental benefits should complement strong core coverage, not replace it.
